Pieter Engels was born in the bustling city of Ghent on the 11th of July 1974 but grew up in Lommel, a large village in the Belgian countryside.
In 1998 he graduated with prominence as ‘master in de audiovisual arts/option animation’ at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent.
‘The Big Mix’, his graduation stop-motion film, was received with much acclaim at a number of festivals. It won awards at the Holland Animation Film Festival in 1998, the KROK festival in Russia and the New York Children’s Film festival, both in 2000.
He started his professional career in 1999 as puppet and set builder at the stop-motion studio PEDRI in Ankeveen, the Netherlands. Here, he refined his talents, further improving his knowledge of the tricks of the trade in the world of stop-motion.
After a postgraduate at the Dutch Institute for Animation (NIAf) in 2004 he worked together again with his co-student Efim Perlis. Together they produced the stop-motion film ‘LOST CARGO’, a Belgian-Dutch co-production.
This short film was laurelled with the Canvas prize at the Anima Brussels Animation Film Festival in 2006 and a second time at the Lago Festival in Italy in 2007.
In 2005, Pieter concentrated himself on the postproduction of ‘LOST CARGO’ and carried out a number of freelance assignments as illustrator and sculptor.
In 2006 he began his career as freelance concept artist at WGames!/Vanguard Games contributing to bringing to life the fantasy world of ‘Mistbound’, from whence subsequently ‘Greed Corp’ en ‘Gatling Gun’ were born.
Having become full time employee at the Vanguard Games studio in 2008, he was quickly promoted to senior concept artist, greatly enhancing the visual attractiveness for a number of Premium Games.
Since 2013 Pieter has been working as a visual arts lecturer at Digital Arts and Entertainment (DAE) in Kortrijk - Belgium.
